Let’s face it; we spend more time at work than anywhere else.
Instead of feeling uncomfortable in your professional environment, there’s a simple solution: create a great desk space for yourself. Having a welcoming, personal desk makes coming to work as pleasant as possible.
Think about your desk like you would your flat. Take ownership of it. You live there. There’s an empowering feeling about choosing what goes on your desk and how it’s arranged. Take control of this small piece of real estate.
Here are 10 simple tips to get started making your desk a great space to work in:
1. Start with an organised work surface
Spend a few minutes at the end of the day tidying your desk. When you walk in the next morning, you’ll feel at ease and ready to be productive.
2. Decorate the perimeter of your desk
The perimeter of your desk should have things that you need, but don’t need to use at every moment. Items at the perimeter are readily available for you to access when you need them. Perimeter items could include pictures of your dog, healthy snacks, and a stapler.
3. Stay hydrated
Hydration is highly important. Invest in a quality, unique, non-breakable water bottle that makes you excited to carry around the office and serves as a statement piece for your desk.
4. A chair you love
If you’re sitting all day, make sure you’re comfortable. If you don’t like your chair, ask for a new one. If the Finance department won’t splurge for a new chair, bring in a stylish cushion and sit on that. Feeling comfortable all day can really change your attitude.
5. A clean desktop
A clean desktop can make getting on your computer feel effortless. If your desktop is clean and well organized, you know that you’ll be able to find what you need. You’ll be calm when you’re in a stressful situation.
6. Get a good lamp
Not only does a lamp give you the lighting that those fluorescent lights can’t offer, a lamp creates ambiance. This can make a huge difference, especially if you don’t have access to natural sunlight. Plus, a lamp feels very welcoming for you and for any guests that come to your desk.
7. A reminder to get up and walk around
By setting a simple reminder on your calendar or phone, you remind yourself to get up and walk around at various points throughout the day. This is a good reminder to stretch your legs, make a cup of tea, interact with other humans, or see some sunlight! Plus, walking around breaks up your day and gives you something to look forward to.
8. Have everything you need within arm’s reach
Make sure that everything you need is within arm’s reach. You don’t want to go fumbling through your desk to get things that you need all the time. Make sure that everything has a place on your desk and that it’s all within arm’s reach. Some things that you might need to access all the time are your phone, water bottle, lipbalm, favourite pens, paper, chargers, diary, or sticky notes.
9. Get a plant
Plants bring so much life and brightness to your desk. You don’t have to get a huge plant. You can get a tiny, cute cactus that has a little home on the perimeter of the desk. You can even name your plant something witty, like Mr. Darcy or Queen Elizabeth I!
10. Make your commute better
The beginning and end of your day are always the same: the commute. Before you leave your desk, make sure you’ve downloaded your favorite podcast/playlist/audiobook is downloaded. Charge your phone, put on comfy shoes, and have a great commute home. Because tomorrow, you’re going to do it all again.
Making a few changes to your desk environment can create a great work space. Your desk is something you can control – something you can take ownership of. Be proud of your work space.
You work hard – your desk should be a calm environment that makes you feel confident and productive.
